  • To check your size, measure the distance across the punching knuckles on the back of your hand (Do this by laying your knuckles flat on a ruler). Measure from the side of your hand at the index finger across the 4 knuckles.

    Warm-up and Cool-down

    Any exercise should start with warming up the body and end with cooling down the body. There are many exercises for warming up and cooling down the body. Generally, warm-up can be done by belly breathing, jogging, and dynamic stretches like arm circles and leg swings. Plyometric exercises like burpees and box jumps may also be incorporated. Normally, cool-down can be done by belly breathing, static stretches like holding each stretch for few seconds or minutes and having friendly conversations with peers in an atmosphere of camaraderie. Keeping the body sufficiently hydrated with water is essential.

    Striking

    —Throws. Hold on to the training partner and practice throws. For maximum impact, throws should utilize the training partner’s momentum.
    —Sweeps. You can practice different types of leg sweeps. Concentrate on not losing your own balance while disbalancing your training partner.
    —Takedowns. Besides the common single-leg and double-leg takedowns, you may also practice other types of takedowns involving pushing or pulling.
    —Submissions. Practice submissions like chokes, arm bars, and leg bars in guard, rear, side control, and mount positions, with speedy transitions between them. Escaping from various submissions may also be practiced.
